I sent my first book off to a publisher when I was thirteen. I can remember very nervously asking my English teacher how to go about it. When he told me the format, I was gutted because I’d spent weeks typing up my manuscript, single spaced on both sides of A5 paper – because that’s what I thought a book looked like. A few months later, I received my first rejection. I still have it, and the book!
I wrote throughout my teens and twenties, but it was when I was thirty that I decided to take things seriously, put the work in and actually learn how to write. I started with crime then moved to YA, where I finally got picked up. I wrote four YA books before deciding it was time for a change and a move to middle grade.
