I still love The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, but as an adult I read Holes, by Louis Sachar, and I fell in love with it. It’s like a huge jigsaw puzzle, and all the seemingly unrelated pieces slide into place as the end approaches – an amazing feat. It is the perfect book.

Maggie lives in Fennis Wick, enclosed and protected by a twisted boundary. Beyond this, the Quiet War rages and the dirty, dangerous wanderers roam. One hot September day she meets Una, a hungry wanderer girl in need of help, and everything Maggie has ever known gets turned on its head.
